Commonsense Solutions to Improving Your Working Environment

Happy New Year! We are often asked how to improve office environments and we have found that by making a few simple changes, especially for those who spend a great deal of time working at a computer, we can enhance both the individual’s comfort and the workspace itself.  With that in mind we thought we would put together a series of articles, that we hope will assist you and your staff implement some commonsense changes to improve your working environment.  These three tips are a good start:

  •
  • When seated with your feet flat on the floor, “draw” an imaginary straight line from your knees to the centre of your hips, adjust the seat height so that this “line” is parallel to the floor. For women, if you wear different height heels, you should adjust the seat height accordingly – daily if need be.  If your worksurface now feels too high, try using a footrest which will allow you to raise the height of your chair and thus keep the parallel line from knee to hip.

    • Clean your monitor screen of lint and dirt.  A dirty screen makes it difficult to focus on the text and increases the incidence of glare causing eye strain.  Then adjust your monitor to avoid “hot spots” from the lights and windows.  It is preferable to have your monitor at right-angles to direct light but if this is not possible, use window blinds or tilt your screen to reduce the glare.
    • You should be able to draw a straight line through the centre of your chest, through the “B” key on your keyboard and the centre of your monitor.  If not, then you need to move things around to achieve this straight line.  When you sit facing your monitor, your shoulders should be square and relaxed.  When typing, your forearms should be parallel to the floor or if you prefer your hands should be slightly lower than your elbows.  Never work with your hands above your elbows or your shoulders lifted – you’ll thank us for this in 10 years!
