Greetings! The warm weather is upon us and it's time to apply the principles of "Spring Cleaning" to your office. Over the next three weeks we will give you some tips on how to make this happen. Clearing of office clutter can be broken down into three distinct areas: decluttering your office; reorganizing your office; and maintenance. All are equally important and we will expand on each individually over the next three weeks. Think of your desk as a work surface for current and daily work and not a storage space. This thinking will help you to keep your office better organized and have less clutter. Decluttering your workspace:
- Why declutter your office? Beside the benefits of a clean office, with a clean office you will be more productive; there will be less distractions; and you will more easily stay on top of tasks at hand. Equally important you will be less likely to miss events or deadlines. The results will allow you to be more confident and you will appear more competent. Ultimately you will have more time to focus on what will make you more successful.
- Make the time to deal with the clutter. Block time to declutter your office and only reschedule if absolutely necessary.
- The best place to start decluttering is the desk and work out from there.
- When working on decluttering your desk, work from right to left if you are right handed and left to right if you’re left handed. This will give your cleaning and organizing a flow that is comfortable for you.
- When you pick up a piece of paper there are three decisions to be made for it. Is it to be filed? Acted upon or Discarded? Make piles according to these three choices and once you have gone through all of the paperwork, start work on the three piles and give each piece its proper place. Discarding can be throwing it out, shredding it or removing it from your office, such as filing it in the resource library.
